December events in Florida

Mickey's Jingle Jungle Parade

9th November 2013 - 2nd January 2014

This December event takes place in the Animal Kingdom theme park at the Walt Disney World Resort, near Orlando. It is the world's largest animal-themed park, covering 500 acres.

Check the Times Guide at the park on the day of your visit for the time of the parade. Being an outside event, it is possible for it to be cancelled if the weather is bad. The parade begins at Harambe village in the Africa section of the park and circles round Discovery Island before returning to Harambe about 15 minutes later.

The lively and colourful Mickey's Jingle Jungle Parade is a festive version of Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade held during the remainder of the year. The park's safari vehicles are bedecked with Christmas decorations, tinsel, wreaths and presents. Many of your favourite Disney characters are in the parade, including Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, Brer Rabbit, Brer Bear, Baloo, Rafiki, Terk, Timon and King Louie. Check out which one is dressed as Father Christmas. As Minnie rides by in her float, the cinammon scent of the cookies she has baked wafts in the air.

Beautifully constructed and designed larger-than-life puppets dance in the parade. You soon blank out the people who carry or pedal them along, as you become wrapped up in the spectacle of the elephant, giraffe, alligator and kangaroo, to name just a few. The parade is joined by stilt walkers, dancers and drummers. Christmas carols are jazzed up with an African beat.

Explore the Animal Kingdom, which is divided into seven themed areas. Ride on the Expedition Everest high speed roller coaster at the Forbidden Mountain, but watch out for the Yeti! Go on the Kilimanjaro Safari Expedition in an opened-sided vehicle to see lions, hippo, giraffes and other African animals roaming freely. Cool down on a thrilling white-water raft ride down the Kali River Rapids. Take in a live show, The Festival of the Lion King or Finding Nemo - The Musical.

A visit to the Animal Kingdom in December 2013 puts a whole new slant on the festive celebrations.

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party

December 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 13th, 15th, 17th, 19th, 20th 2013

Hurry to Disney's Magic Kingdom for the best Xmas party in town! A separate ticket is required on party nights, which are not covered by the normal park admission. Visit the Disney web site for tickets or purchase on the night. It is cheaper if you buy in advance.

Held after the normal park hours from 7pm to midnight, party-goers have the whole of the Magic Kingdom to themselves. Most of the regular attractions and rides stay open and queues are much smaller.

One of the favourite events is the twice nightly Mickey's Once Upon a Christmastime Parade at 8.15 and 10.30 pm. See all the well known Disney characters plus colourful and spectacular floats, some of which are horse drawn. Celebrate with Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Pooh, Tiger, Scrooge McDuck, Prince Charming, Cinderella, Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs, elves, snowmen, gingerbread men and the impressive troop of toy soldiers. The finale is the appearance of Santa Clause himself on his colourful brightly-lit sleigh. The parade route starts from Frontierland, passes through Liberty Square, goes around the central hub in front of Cinderella's Castle and down Main Street. Look out for snow flurries in Main Street.

Enjoy complimentary cookies and hot cocoa at a number of locations. Meet-and-greet opportunities with your favourite Disney characters are throughout the park. Attend character dance parties. Woody has an open house at the Diamond Horseshoe in Frontierland. Do some Christmas shopping at a number of stores that stay open. There is not much that you won't find at the giant Emporium store in Main Street.

Cinderella's Castle will be lit up by 200,000 festive lights. New for this year, it will appear to be covered by shimmering icicles. The spectacular Holiday Wishes: Celebrate the Spirit of the Season fireworks display over the castle is at 9.30 pm, hosted by Jiminy Cricket. Watch out for Tinker bell at she flies across the night sky from one of the tallest turrets.

An unforgettable night out for all the family.

Epcot Candlelight Processional

29th November 2013 - 30th December 2013

Epcot is one of the four theme parks at the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando. If you ever wonder about the odd name it stands for Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow.

The Epcot Candlelight Processional is held at the America Gardens Theatre, retelling the story of Christmas by a special celebrity narrator. The 2013 line up includes Ashley Judd on December 4th & 5th, Whoopi Goldberg on December 6th & 7th and Sigourney Weaver from December 8th to the 10th. The full line up and times, which are subject to change, can be found on the Disney web site.

The Christmas story is illustrated with carols sung by the choir, all holding a candle, and backed by the 50 piece orchestra.

The show runs 3 times nightly, lasts for about 40 minutes, and the seating is on a first come first served basis. The seats do fill up very quickly. The only guaranteed way to get a seat is to book a Candlelight Dinner Package. The package includes lunch or dinner at any of 14 restaurants in the World Showcase. These include Les Chefs de France, Le Cellier Steakhouse in Canada and the Nine Dragons Restaurant in China. If you are missing your traditional Christmas dinner you can always go to the Rose & Crown!

In addition you have a seat in the special viewing area for the Illuminations Reflection of Earth festive fireworks display. The view is across the lagoon, with the World Showcase countries lining the shore in the background. A huge rotating earth is projected into the night sky, slowly crossing the horizon, amid spectacular fireworks. The show finishes with seasonal good wishes and carols.

If you are visiting during the last two weeks in December 2013 it will be busy. The first two weeks of the month are a lot quieter.

Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights

8th November 2013 - 5th January 2014

This annual display commences at dusk at Disney's Hollywood Studios. This is usually around 6pm and is included in your admission ticket.

Millions of dancing lights decorate the Streets of America. You'll recognise New York and San Francisco. Whole buildings are sheathed in sheets of multi-coloured lights. Above them are angels, twirling carousels and a Peace on Earth Globe, together with Santa and his reindeer. The lights, synchronised to festive music, dim every 10 minutes and then spring back to life in a dazzling spectacle.

The humble origin of the display was a thousand lights decorating the family home of Jennings Osborne, an Arkansas businessman. Over the years the display grew and grew until it contained three million lights. The neighbours were not too happy and as a result the lights moved to Walt Disney World in 1995. More than two million new lights have been added since.

The lights are turned on at dusk by a lucky family picked from the visitors. Entry is included in your normal park admission. Special 3D glasses are on sale to enhance your viewing experience. See who will be the first in your family to spot one of the hidden Mickeys in the display. There are 43 so it shouldn't be too difficult to find one. A bigger challenge is to spot the single purple cat that was transferred accidentally to Disney from the Osborne's Halloween display!

This is a must-see event in your December 2013 Florida holiday.

Florida weather in December

December is a good month to visit Florida. You won’t find the tropical heat and humidity of earlier months.

Instead the temperatures are pleasant and comfortable, most days into the 70s. It can get cooler, particularly in the early morning or evenings, so take a jumper or jacket along with your shorts and t shirts. It barely rains in December, what little there is often by night. The hurricane season is over.

Snowbirds winter in Florida and you’ll see lots of visitors from Canada and the Northern US enjoying the fine weather.

The sea temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico range from the mid to high 60s, the Atlantic coast being a little cooler.

The Walt Disney World theme parks are relatively quiet during for first half of the month. Christmas and New Year are popular times to visit and the parks are busier.
